Travel vaccinations and travel medicine at Mayfield Medical Connection
Mayfield Medical Connection provides travel medicine consultations with a GP and travel vaccinations administered by our practice nurses, at 55 Hanbury Street, Mayfield, in inner Newcastle. No referral is required. Book six to eight weeks before you travel where possible, because some vaccine courses need several weeks to complete. Call (02) 4968 2157.
Why it needs a consultation, not just a jab
Travel advice is not a list of vaccines. What you need depends on where you are going, which regions within that country, how long you are staying, whether you are in cities or rural areas, the time of year, what you will be doing, your age, your existing health conditions, your medications and what you have already had.
Two people travelling to the same country in the same month can need quite different things. A travel consultation works out what applies to you, then the vaccinations and prescriptions follow from that.
What a travel consultation covers
- Your itinerary, in detail, including stopovers
- Your vaccination history and what you are already covered for
- Recommended and required vaccinations for your destinations
- Malaria risk and whether preventive medication is appropriate
- Travellers diarrhoea, food and water precautions, and what to carry
- Insect bite avoidance, including dengue and other mosquito borne illness
- Altitude, heat, and long haul flight considerations including clot risk
- Managing existing conditions and medications while away, including documentation for carrying medicines
- A plan for what to do if you become unwell overseas
Timing matters
Book six to eight weeks before departure where you can. Several vaccine courses are given as multiple doses over weeks, and some need time to take effect before you leave. If your trip is sooner than that it is still worth booking, because a shortened schedule is usually better than nothing, but the earlier you come in the more options you have.
If you travel regularly, it is worth keeping a record of what you have had and when, so each trip starts from what you already have rather than from scratch.
How it works
- Book a travel medicine appointment with a GP. Bring your itinerary and any record of previous vaccinations.
- Your GP works out what you need and writes any prescriptions required.
- Vaccinations are given by a practice nurse in the treatment room, either at the same visit or at a follow up appointment depending on the schedule.
- Return for later doses if your course needs them.
Fees
Mayfield Medical Connection is a private billing practice. Travel vaccines are generally not covered by Medicare and are paid for separately from the consultation. Some nurse services carry a fee.
