Why people travel for this
Long acting reversible contraception is straightforward once you find someone who inserts it. Finding that person is the hard part. Many practices assess and then refer the insertion elsewhere, which adds a wait and a second appointment to something that could have been done in one place.
Three GPs at Mayfield Medical Connection insert. Dr Katherine Hanks is an experienced Mirena and Implanon inserter. Dr Katie Fisher holds a special interest in IUD assessment and insertion. Dr Shafiq Rahman trained with Family Planning New Zealand in contraceptive services and inserts and removes IUDs. You do not need to be an existing patient and you do not need a referral.
What is available
Contraceptive implant, Implanon
A small rod placed under the skin of the upper arm, providing contraception for up to three years. Insertion, removal and replacement are all done at the practice under local anaesthetic, usually in a single appointment.
Hormonal IUD, Mirena and Kyleena
A small device placed in the uterus, providing contraception for up to five years, and often used to manage heavy or painful periods as well. Insertion, removal and replacement are available.
Copper IUD
A non hormonal option providing contraception for up to five or ten years depending on the device. Removal and replacement are available. Discuss insertion at your assessment appointment.
Assessment and choice
If you are not sure which option suits you, book a contraceptive assessment. That appointment covers your history, what you want from contraception, whether you are planning a pregnancy in the near future, how each option affects bleeding, and the practical differences between them.
How the appointments work
- Assessment appointment. Your GP takes a history, checks suitability, explains the options and answers your questions. If an IUD is right for you, this is also where any pre insertion steps are arranged.
- Insertion appointment. A longer appointment booked specifically for the procedure. Bring someone with you if you would prefer not to drive home afterwards.
- Follow up. A check after insertion, then ongoing care as part of your general practice.
What to expect
Implant insertion is done with local anaesthetic and most people describe pressure rather than pain. IUD insertion is usually described as period type cramping that settles within a day or so. Your GP will talk you through pain relief options beforehand. Bleeding patterns change with all of these methods, and what to expect is part of the conversation at your assessment rather than something to find out afterwards.
