Iron Infusions in Newcastle

Iron infusions at Mayfield Medical Connection

Mayfield Medical Connection provides iron infusions in the treatment room at 55 Hanbury Street, Mayfield, in inner Newcastle. Infusions are administered by our practice nurses following assessment by one of our GPs. Infusions are available to existing patients of the practice. If you are not currently a patient, book a GP appointment first and your iron studies and suitability can be assessed from there. Call (02) 4968 2157.

Who needs one

Iron deficiency is common, and for many people iron tablets are enough. An infusion is generally considered when tablets have not worked, when they cause side effects that make them impossible to keep taking, when absorption is the problem rather than intake, or when iron stores need to be corrected faster than tablets can manage.

Common situations include heavy periods, pregnancy and the postpartum period, coeliac disease and other absorption disorders, chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and recovery after significant blood loss or surgery.

Whether an infusion is right for you is a clinical decision made with your GP on the basis of your iron studies and your history, not something to self select.

How it works here

  1. GP appointment. Your GP reviews your symptoms, orders or reviews iron studies and a full blood count, and looks for the cause of the deficiency rather than just the deficiency itself. Finding out why you are low matters as much as correcting it.
  2. Pathology. Blood collection happens on site. Australian Clinical Labs operate a collection service inside the practice, Monday to Thursday 7:30am to 12pm and 1pm to 3:30pm, and Friday 8am to 12pm.
  3. Decision and consent. If an infusion is appropriate your GP explains the benefits, the risks and the alternatives, and the infusion is booked.
  4. The infusion. Administered by a practice nurse in the treatment room. Set aside time for the infusion itself plus a period of observation afterwards.
  5. Follow up. Repeat iron studies at the interval your GP sets, to confirm your stores have corrected and stayed corrected.

Other infusions

The practice nurses also administer Aclasta and Vyepti infusions. As with iron, these are for existing patients of the practice and follow assessment by one of our GPs.

Practical notes

  • Allow more time than a standard appointment. There is an observation period after the infusion.
  • Eat normally beforehand unless your GP tells you otherwise.
  • Skin staining at the drip site is an uncommon but recognised risk. Your nurse will talk you through what to watch for.
  • Some nurse services carry fees. This is confirmed with you before booking.

Fees

Mayfield Medical Connection is a private billing practice. Medicare rebates apply to the GP consultation and to pathology where clinically indicated. Some nurse services carry a fee. Costs are confirmed with you before the infusion is booked. Call (02) 4968 2157.

Do I need to be a patient of the practice to have an iron infusion?

Yes. Infusions at Mayfield Medical Connection are provided for existing patients. If you are not currently a patient, book a GP appointment first. Your iron studies and suitability for an infusion can be assessed from there. Dr Shafiq Rahman, Dr Katherine Hanks and Dr Ethan Boyd are accepting new patients.

Do I need a referral for an iron infusion?

No referral is needed. An iron infusion follows assessment by one of our GPs, who reviews your iron studies and decides with you whether an infusion is appropriate.

How long does an iron infusion take?

Allow more time than a standard appointment. The infusion itself is followed by a period of observation in the treatment room. Your nurse will confirm timing when the appointment is booked.

Is an iron infusion covered by Medicare?

Mayfield Medical Connection is a private billing practice. Medicare rebates apply to the GP consultation and to pathology where clinically indicated. Some nurse services carry a fee, which is confirmed with you before booking. Call (02) 4968 2157.

When is an infusion used instead of iron tablets?

An infusion is generally considered when tablets have not worked, when their side effects make them impossible to continue, when absorption is the underlying problem, or when iron stores need correcting faster than tablets allow. This is a clinical decision made with your GP based on your iron studies and history.

Can I get blood tests done at the practice?

Yes. Australian Clinical Labs operate a pathology collection service inside Mayfield Medical Connection, Monday to Thursday 7:30am to 12pm and 1pm to 3:30pm, and Friday 8am to 12pm. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the end of a collection period.
