Circumcision services at Mayfield Medical Connection
Mayfield Medical Connection is a general practice at 55 Hanbury Street, Mayfield, serving Newcastle families since 1938. Dr Shafiq Rahman is our GP with specific training and affiliation in circumcision through the Circumcision Academy of Australia.
The service covers infants, older children and adults. Previously it was offered for infants only, so if you have read otherwise elsewhere, that is now out of date.
Every circumcision begins with a consultation. That appointment is where the procedure, the aftercare, the risks and benefits and the fee are discussed, and where Dr Rahman confirms the procedure is appropriate for the individual patient. Nothing is booked before that conversation has happened.
Infant circumcision
For infants, timing depends on the baby’s health and individual circumstances, and is best worked out at the consultation rather than from a general rule. Dr Rahman will examine your baby, talk you through the procedure and the aftercare, and tell you whether he recommends proceeding, waiting, or not proceeding.
Older children and adults
Circumcision for older children and adults is arranged following a consultation with Dr Rahman. Adults come to this for a range of reasons: clinical ones such as phimosis, recurrent balanitis or recurrent infection, religious or cultural observance, or personal preference. All are reasonable, and the reason is relevant mainly because it affects whether a Medicare rebate applies.
There is a fuller guide for adults, including recovery, at Adult Circumcision in Newcastle.
